1) According to this BBC news article from 2004 it removes chemicals at the site of joints which cause the pain and some of the damage.
2) And this undated article states the omega-3 fatty acids within cod liver oil prevent the aggrecan-and collagen-degrading enzymes that break down joint cartilage. (Basically a slightly more technical version of the first article.)
3) And if you have the time to read an actual scolarly paper on the issue here is one titled: “Efficacy of cod liver oil as an adjunct to non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug treatment in the management of osteoarthritis in general practice.” that was published in ’92 in the Academic Journal “Annals of the Rheumatic Diseases.”
