Drug or Substance Abuse Counselor Jobs?

Question by 1208: Drug or substance abuse counselor jobs?
Okay, so this lady at my work found out I go to college and she is really trying to go back to school, but she thinks I know all the answers. I forget what she wants to be, but I think she said she wants to be a substance abuse counselor or something close to that, but from what little research I’ve done you have to have a higher degree, which she doesn’t want because she’s older and doesn’t really have the time to get a few degrees and then start. She wants a job she can study for, for 18 or so months and the start her career. Any idea on a job she could study for in that field? Thanks.

First of all, you shouldn’t be looking for her.
Secondly, if she wants to be a counselor she has to go back to school, she cannot just get a job because she wants that certain job.
Third, most people, like the VAST majority go into that field because they are recovering addicts/alcoholics or have a close family member who is. I will be honest, most addicts/alcoholics prefer talking to a counselor that is in recovery, because it is a VERY difficult thing for someone who doesn’t have addiction to understand.
Fourth, Where I live, recovering addicts (they HAVE to be recovering addicts) can train for 30 hours and become a Peer Support Specialist. These are people that offer support to other addicts when they are going through addiction and recovery. NO higher college degree is needed.

Yes! She needs to scamper down to the local community college. There are GOBS of programs that will fit her needs to a T!

Remind her, gently, that you are NOT an academic advisor and you might very well mess her up with your advise. Therefore, she REALLY needs to speak with an academic advisor.

BTW: I recommend she start with a CC rather than a university simply because she needs a more immediate path to program completion. Then she can decide if she needs a university degree.
